Start where it matters. The Patriots took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Getting Jones where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will need Watson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Caleb Williams in Round 1, Pick 3, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Troy Franklin in slot 35 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Adisa Isaac at No. 68 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Roman Wilson in the 103rd pick, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Roger Rosengarten in pick 182 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Nathaniel Watson at the Round 7 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Christian Jones at the 227th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nothing to complain about; Daequan Hardy went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
