The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
That Jacobs pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
If All pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.5
· Pick 5
· Drake Maye
· QB
· rank 5
In slot 5 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Quinyon Mitchell
· CB
· rank 19
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Quinyon Mitchell in Round 2, Pick 2. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Patrick Paul
· OT
· rank 67
No drama and no debate, Patrick Paul went about where he belonged in pick 68. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 74
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in the 69th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.3
· Pick 103
· Austin Booker
· DE-EDGE
· rank 82
Steal is underselling it; Austin Booker at the Round 4 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.5
· Pick 105
· Dominick Puni
· OT
· rank 91
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dominick Puni at pick No. 105. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.1
· Pick 137
· Johnny Wilson
· WR
· rank 128
Johnny Wilson is a better player than No. 137 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.5
· Pick 180
· Jalyx Hunt
· S-EDGE
· rank 171
Jalyx Hunt slid further than he should have, and the 180th overall pick is lovely value for the S-EDGE. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
R6.18
· Pick 193
· Erick All
· TE
· rank 210
Erick All at pick No. 193 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
R7.5
· Pick 225
· Frank Gore Jr.
· RB
· rank 224
Frank Gore Jr. in the 225th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.11
· Pick 231
· Curtis Jacobs
· LB
· rank 197
They barely believed it either: Curtis Jacobs still on the board at the 231st pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
