Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Patriots spent the 220th overall pick on Hayden Conner, a name the board had a full 47 spots lower.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Hancock pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
They let Emeka Egbuka come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kyle Kennard at No. 69 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They liked Charles Grant enough to skip the value, taking him in the 77th pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jordan James in the 106th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
Nothing to complain about; Malachi Moore went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Ricky White III at No. 217 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Hayden Conner in pick 220, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Jordan Hancock at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
