The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Drew Kendall, taking him 55 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Loveland pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Colston Loveland slid further than he should have, and No. 38 is lovely value for the tight end. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jalen Royals in Round 3, Pick 5 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Kyle Kennard at par in the 77th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cam Skattebo in slot 106 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Value said wait; Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick No. 144 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Hancock at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Hayden Conner this early at pick No. 220. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Drew Kendall at No. 238 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
