The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Mustapha. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In No. 23 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board had cheaper options than Johnny Wilson at slot 108, and it noticed. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Cam Hart, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 29. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Malik Mustapha at the 157th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had Trevor Keegan higher than the 167th pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Josh Newton in pick 177 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They let Tyrice Knight come to them and pounced at pick No. 230. A minor need, but a need all the same.
KT Leveston slipping to pick No. 232 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
