The Commanders did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Andru Phillips fell into the Round 5 slot. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
The Watts pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Adonai Mitchell
· WR
· rank 31
Adonai Mitchell at the Round 2 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.22
· Pick 54
· Junior Colson
· LB
· rank 52
They took Junior Colson at par in pick No. 54, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Kingsley Suamataia
· OT
· rank 61
A tidy little value on Kingsley Suamataia in No. 67, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.19
· Pick 83
· Mike Sainristil
· CB
· rank 75
They read the board right and Mike Sainristil was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 19. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.22
· Pick 85
· Trey Benson
· RB
· rank 87
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trey Benson. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Dominick Puni
· OT
· rank 89
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Dominick Puni in pick 100. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.3
· Pick 139
· Andru Phillips
· CB
· rank 102
The board fumbled Andru Phillips all the way to the 139th pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.6
· Pick 142
· Jacob Cowing
· WR
· rank 147
By-the-book stuff, Jacob Cowing at slot 142 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.16
· Pick 152
· Luke McCaffrey
· WR
· rank 149
Nothing to complain about; Luke McCaffrey went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.18
· Pick 154
· Dallin Holker
· TE
· rank 150
Dallin Holker in the Round 5 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.19
· Pick 155
· Marcus Harris
· DE-EDGE
· rank 152
A reasonable price with a little left over, Marcus Harris in slot 155. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.20
· Pick 156
· Dylan Laube
· RB
· rank 157
Dylan Laube at pick No. 156 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
R6.1
· Pick 176
· Grayson Murphy
· DL-EDGE
· rank 176
No edge and no loss on Grayson Murphy in Round 6, Pick 1; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
R7.2
· Pick 222
· Eric Watts
· DL-EDGE
· rank 230
They paid a round early for Eric Watts in No. 222, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.20
· Pick 240
· Dominique Hampton
· S
· rank 234
Dominique Hampton at the 240th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
