Nobody had Marvin Jones Jr. this high, and it is not close. The Bears reached 90 spots to get him at pick No. 239. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Getting McAlister where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 10 they get a featured back, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A quiet steal in the Round 2 slot: Emmanuel McNeil-Warren for less than the market said. A minor itch, scratched.
Devin Moore at the 89th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Parker Brailsford in Round 4, Pick 29 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Logan Fano at pick 189, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for VJ Payne in slot 199, and that is fine. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Fa'alili Fa'amoe. The roster fit checks out.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 226 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Marvin Jones Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached a country mile for Jack Pyburn at the 241st pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
