You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Dolphins did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.
The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on Wilson to cover a lot of smaller sins. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick 35. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Payton Wilson at the Round 2 slot is the proof. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They took Bralen Trice at par in the 71st overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cam Hart. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A tidy bit of business in No. 137, where Johnny Wilson graded well above the range. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Kitan Oladapo in the 157th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Nothing to complain about; Caedan Wallace went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A quiet steal in Round 6, Pick 25: Kendall Milton for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
They read the board right and Tyler Owens was the payoff at pick 239. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
