It is the swing that defines the weekend: Shaun Dolac in pick 173, a good 128 spots before the room expected him. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
Getting Campbell where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 30 they get juice off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 31 they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Tyler Booker at pick 41 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A wild overpay on Donovan Ezeiruaku in the 47th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Will Campbell in Round 3, Pick 14, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jared Ivey at the 81st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Maxwell Hairston went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They reached into another round for Antwaun Powell-Ryland, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Carson Schwesinger at pick No. 95 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. The roster fit checks out.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 114 with a little surplus value in Will Howard. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a tight end like Elijah Arroyo reach Round 4, Pick 22 and blink. They did not. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; Savion Williams at slot 128 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Charles Grant at pick 131 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Cam Skattebo at the Round 4 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Tai Felton at slot 133 is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good price on Darius Alexander in the 137th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Rylie Mills at pick 140, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 148 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jared Wilson in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jack Nelson in the 160th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
