The Cardinals did not so much draft Shaun Dolac as overpay for him, 124 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C- in the wash.
The Harris pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Hit on Shemar Stewart and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get juice off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick 32 they get a problem off the edge, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on JT Tuimoloau at slot 48, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tyler Booker at pick No. 49 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Donovan Jackson at Round 2, Pick 23 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking T.J. Sanders in the 86th pick is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
