Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins bet the future on Ewers. The board says B.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Dolphins took Gee Scott Jr. at slot 232, roughly 295 spots before his name belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B.

Quinn Ewers is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.

They banked enough surplus on McCullough to cover a lot of smaller sins. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Quinn Ewers · QB · rank 17
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.13 · Pick 45 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 39
Good price on Tyler Booker in slot 45, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
R3.34 · Pick 98 · David Bailey · LB-EDGE · rank 103
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on David Bailey. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.35 · Pick 99 · Theo Wease Jr. · WR · rank 139
They left a pile of value on the table to take Theo Wease Jr. this early at the 99th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.13 · Pick 114 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 129
Jihaad Campbell at No. 114 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.13 · Pick 151 · Logan Brown · OT · rank 167
A reach for Logan Brown in pick 151; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.14 · Pick 152 · Cobee Bryant · CB · rank 149
Nothing to complain about; Cobee Bryant went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R6.34 · Pick 209 · Dasan McCullough · S · rank 201
A tidy bit of business in slot 209, where Dasan McCullough graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R6.36 · Pick 211 · Gabe Jacas · LB-EDGE · rank 224
A premium they did not need to pay, Gabe Jacas a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.13 · Pick 227 · Tyreak Sapp · DE-EDGE · rank 296
Tyreak Sapp at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.18 · Pick 232 · Gee Scott Jr. · TE · rank 527
Gee Scott Jr. at the 232nd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.35 · Pick 249 · Aaron Lewis · DL-EDGE · rank 385
A real head-scratcher, Aaron Lewis in pick No. 249 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
