You can hear the double-takes from here. The Dolphins took Gee Scott Jr. at slot 232, roughly 295 spots before his name belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B.
Quinn Ewers is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
They banked enough surplus on McCullough to cover a lot of smaller sins. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Good price on Tyler Booker in slot 45, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on David Bailey. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Theo Wease Jr. this early at the 99th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jihaad Campbell at No. 114 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach for Logan Brown in pick 151; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Cobee Bryant went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy bit of business in slot 209, where Dasan McCullough graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A premium they did not need to pay, Gabe Jacas a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tyreak Sapp at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Gee Scott Jr. at the 232nd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A real head-scratcher, Aaron Lewis in pick No. 249 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
