You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Trevin Wallace at the 174th pick, roughly 60 spots before his name belonged. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jaylen Wright at the 56th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for McKinnley Jackson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Sataoa Laumea. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Trevin Wallace in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cornelius Johnson at pick 216 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A cornerback of that caliber at No. 233 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Khalid Duke at the 244th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
