The Cowboys did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Josh Newton fell into No. 174. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
Reaching for Wallace left real value on the table behind him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in Round 2, Pick 24; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kris Abrams-Draine at slot 87 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Beaux Limmer in the 90th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 174 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Trevin Wallace at pick 186 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Frank Gore Jr. at the Round 6 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Isaiah Williams still on the board at No. 226. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A real head-scratcher, Solomon Byrd in pick 233 is miles ahead of his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board had cheaper options than Sam Hartman at No. 244, and it noticed. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
