Thirty-one other rooms let Jeffrey Bassa slide, and the Patriots were the ones holding the card at pick No. 220. Highway robbery. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
Every board in the league had Jones Jr. lower, and that gap is the story. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 1 they get an island corner. More want than need.
Fair-plus on Tate Ratledge, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jihaad Campbell in the 67th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Sampson still on the board at No. 82. The roster fit checks out.
A safety of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 2 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jake Majors in slot 136, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 138th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
A wild overpay on Nick Nash in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jeffrey Bassa in the 220th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Somehow Jaylen Reed was still sitting there in No. 238, and they pounced on premier safety value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
