Some picks age like wine; Fabien Lovett at Round 3, Pick 28 will need to, sitting 54 spots clear of his grade. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They banked enough surplus on Dixon to cover a lot of smaller sins. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ladd McConkey in No. 56, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Cedric Gray this early at the 87th overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Fabien Lovett in slot 91, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached a country mile for Tanor Bortolini at pick 173, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A running back of that caliber at the 213th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Johnny Dixon in the 231st pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Frank Gore Jr. at slot 242 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
