The war room fell hard for Joshua Gray, and it showed at the Round 5 slot: 44 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Wilson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a centerfielder for the defense, even if it was a touch early. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 37th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in slot 48; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Graham Barton at the 63rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Braelon Allen at Round 3, Pick 5 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Max Melton in pick No. 94 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had cheaper options than Ricky Pearsall at the 105th overall pick, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Devontez Walker, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Taking Roman Wilson in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for J. Michael Sturdivant in the 142nd pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mike Sainristil in slot 156. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Joshua Gray in No. 171 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Omar Speights at Round 6, Pick 8, and the board is aghast. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Mahogany at pick 185, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Bryson Nesbit in the Round 6 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Xavier Truss at the 220th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
LaDarius Henderson at slot 228 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A big swing on Xavier Thomas at pick 231, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
