The Giants spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
They are betting Crum proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Mustapha at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 18th pick they get their quarterback of the future, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Xavier Worthy at No. 47 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They did well to land Braden Fiske in pick No. 65, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Max Melton in Round 3, Pick 6, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Isaac Guerendo at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A premium they did not need to pay, Theo Johnson a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Tommy Eichenberg in slot 141; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
Malik Mustapha at pick 183 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Matt Lee at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Frank Crum. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
