The Cowboys lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
The Jackson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. That Ford pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 24th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
By-the-book stuff, Sedrick Van Pran at the 65th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Braelon Allen at pick No. 87, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for McKinnley Jackson at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Will Shipley in pick 106 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ty'Ron Hopper. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A slide stopped in No. 216, with Jaylan Ford worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Trevin Wallace at Round 7, Pick 13 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Whittington at the Round 7 slot, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
