The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 72 spots for Trajan Jeffcoat, and value like that does not grow back.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The whole projection now runs through Caleb Williams; hit there and everything else looks smarter.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. McGlothern falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at the 56th pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Brenden Rice in slot 87, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Fair-plus on Khyree Jackson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Braelon Allen at No. 111 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Javon Foster in Round 4, Pick 23 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Tahj Washington in pick No. 143, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Luke McCaffrey slid further than he should have, and pick 173 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dwight McGlothern at slot 188. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 213 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Tip Reiman went about where he belonged in the 222nd overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Jordan Whittington in the 224th pick says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Trajan Jeffcoat in Round 7, Pick 11 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dallas Gant. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A big swing on Dominique Hampton at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. It adds depth where they could use a little.
