There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Frank Crum a full 49 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Melton value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Nubin at pick No. 41, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reach on Kiran Amegadjie in pick 58; the board had better options right there. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Max Melton in the 88th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Cedric Gray at the 91st pick, and the board is aghast. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A real head-scratcher, Luke McCaffrey in No. 126 is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ty'Ron Hopper at the 169th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A wild overpay on Cedric Johnson in No. 202, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Bub Means in pick 219 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Frank Crum in Round 7, Pick 25, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had Marcellas Dial higher than the Round 7 slot, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
