You could see the war room lean forward. Anez Cooper at No. 206 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. They went 7 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 12 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Caleb Lomu at Round 1, Pick 24 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Omar Cooper Jr. in pick 39 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had Josiah Trotter higher than No. 70, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A minor itch, scratched.
Sam Roush in slot 107 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
A safety of that caliber at the Round 4 slot is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kaytron Allen in the 146th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Skyler Gill-Howard in the 149th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Anez Cooper was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Latrell McCutchin Sr. at Round 7, Pick 32 is the proof. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
