The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Chiefs watched Mason Taylor slide 50 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. If Dellinger pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 31 they get a two-high chess piece, and a steal at that.
Taking Jalon Walker in the 63rd pick is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Tate Ratledge a notch or two before his time. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A surprising call. With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the 95th overall pick on Andrew Mukuba, a safety they were not short of.
Mason Taylor at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Garrett Dellinger in Round 7, Pick 38 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
