When a board-topper like Jonah Coleman slides to the 255th pick, you do not overthink it, and the Chiefs did not. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will answer for taking safety early while tight end, quarterback and other spots went begging.
They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Malachi Moore at slot 63 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Trey Amos at No. 72 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 31: Tez Johnson for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end, quarterback and other spots to take Andrew Mukuba, a safety that was not the priority.
Jonah Coleman in the 255th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
