The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chargers reached some 66 spots for AJ Barner, and value like that does not grow back. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Suamataia. The Colson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots still on the board.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get a red-zone target to build around. A real need, handled.
They paid up for Edgerrin Cooper at pick 37 when waiting would have done the job. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 75 on Junior Colson with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots unsolved.
AJ Barner at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy little value on Braelon Allen in slot 110, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Kingsley Suamataia in Round 4, Pick 22 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Khristian Boyd in slot 140, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Trente Jones in pick 181, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They took Jalen Coker at par in pick No. 253, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
