The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chargers reached some 66 spots for AJ Barner, and value like that does not grow back. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is Suamataia. The Colson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots still on the board.

They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Brock Bowers · TE · rank 6
In pick No. 5 they get a red-zone target to build around. A real need, handled.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
They paid up for Edgerrin Cooper at pick 37 when waiting would have done the job. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 52
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 75 on Junior Colson with interior defensive lineman, cornerback and other spots unsolved.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 171
AJ Barner at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 106
A tidy little value on Braelon Allen in slot 110, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.22 · Pick 122 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
Taking Kingsley Suamataia in Round 4, Pick 22 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Khristian Boyd · DL-EDGE · rank 178
This one needs a full-page explanation: Khristian Boyd in slot 140, miles early. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 194
They went early on Trente Jones in pick 181, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint · WR · rank 195
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.33 · Pick 253 · Jalen Coker · WR · rank 251
They took Jalen Coker at par in pick No. 253, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
