The trade table was where it all came apart. The Chargers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Abrams-Draine falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
Caleb Williams in Round 1, Pick 1 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
In No. 5 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value.
In the 9th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Ruke Orhorhoro at slot 69 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Taking Kris Abrams-Draine in the 106th pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Josh Newton in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 183 is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value with a capital V on JD Bertrand in pick 223, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No drama and no debate, Tatum Bethune went about where he belonged in slot 256. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
