There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chargers started one anyway for Baylor Cupp, 143 picks ahead of schedule.
Getting Baker where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 21st overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kris Jenkins in slot 37 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reach for Mike Sainristil in Round 3, Pick 5; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Junior Colson at the 76th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A slide stopped in the Round 4 slot, with Zak Zinter worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Beaux Limmer. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on LaDarius Henderson in slot 168; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Braelon Allen all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
Trey Knox in the 223rd overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
DeMonte Capehart in No. 230 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 239 is the definition of value, full stop. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jalen Green slid further than he should have, and Round 7, Pick 23 is lovely value for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They talked themselves into Isaac Guerendo at pick 247, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Baylor Cupp at the 256th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
