The Chargers did not so much draft Zion Logue as overpay for him, 42 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The Johnson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 10 they get a security blanket over the middle. A real need, handled.
They went early on Jackson Powers-Johnson in pick 37, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reach for T'Vondre Sweat in the Round 2 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Jermaine Burton all the way to No. 69, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Khyree Jackson in the 106th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Braelon Allen in pick No. 126 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, LaDarius Henderson well ahead of where he belonged. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Theo Johnson at slot 183 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid a round early for Braiden McGregor in pick 203, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take J.J. Weaver this early at Round 7, Pick 3. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Zion Logue at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They jumped the gun on Trevor Keegan, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board had cheaper options than Mark Perry at the 254th overall pick, and it noticed. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Zakhari Franklin at No. 256. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
