The Chargers bet big and early on DeMonte Capehart, 42 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Powers-Johnson. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a difference-maker at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
T.J. Tampa at No. 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Jackson Powers-Johnson all the way to the 69th pick, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Jaden Hicks in Round 4, Pick 6, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braelon Allen this early at pick No. 139. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on AJ Barner at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for J.J. Weaver, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for DeMonte Capehart at the 256th pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
