When the story of this class is written, it opens with Braelon Allen at pick No. 106, a reach of 53 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
They banked enough surplus on Latham to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A real need, handled.
JC Latham in Round 2, Pick 5 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Sedrick Van Pran at No. 69, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
A wild overpay on Braelon Allen in pick No. 106, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Javon Baker at the 139th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Andru Phillips at slot 183 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Solomon Byrd at No. 223 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: DeMonte Capehart in slot 256, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
