You can hear the double-takes from here. The Chargers took Jayson Jones at pick No. 256, roughly 64 spots before his name belonged. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Mitchell at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a security blanket over the middle at fair value.
Nice patience on Quinyon Mitchell, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Blake Corum at the 69th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wild overpay on Drake Nugent in No. 106, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take LaDarius Henderson this early at pick No. 139. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for AJ Barner. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Javon Baker at the 183rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylen Harrell in pick 192 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, J.J. Weaver well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jayson Jones at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
