The Chargers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending slot 223 on DeMonte Capehart a full 75 spots early. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Carson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 17th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Zach Frazier at pick No. 37 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They read the board right and Quinyon Mitchell was the payoff at pick 48. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Blake Fisher at Round 3, Pick 11, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Jalen McMillan was still sitting there in slot 106, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Caelen Carson at the 117th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Theo Johnson at slot 139, and it noticed. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a linebacker like Tyrice Knight reach Round 5, Pick 7 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Trey Knox at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylen Harrell at pick No. 211, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
DeMonte Capehart in the 223rd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Isaac Guerendo in the 256th overall pick says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
