The Chargers did not so much draft DeMonte Capehart as overpay for him, 59 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
On value alone, Barrett makes the weekend a net positive. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trey Benson well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Sedrick Van Pran in the 69th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Blake Fisher in the 106th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Theo Johnson at pick No. 139 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jaylen Harrell at Round 6, Pick 11 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Michael Barrett in pick 223, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for DeMonte Capehart. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Isaac Guerendo at the 256th overall pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
