The Chargers clearly saw something nobody else did in Cody Simon, taking him 43 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
The Oladapo pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Brock Bowers at the Round 1 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at Round 2, Pick 5 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Adonai Mitchell in the 38th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ruke Orhorhoro at No. 69 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach for DJ James in slot 106; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Jaylen Wright in pick No. 139, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
Nice patience on Kitan Oladapo, who had no business lasting to pick 183. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jaylan Ford at pick No. 184 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
Joshua Cephus at the 223rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Cody Simon at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
