Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Chargers, and the value they bled adds up to real damage.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Cooper reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Vaki falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They read the board right and Nate Wiggins was the payoff at pick No. 36. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They let Troy Fautanu come to them and pounced at Round 2, Pick 5. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Edgerrin Cooper at the 40th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
MarShawn Lloyd at the Round 4 slot is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Sione Vaki at pick 181 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nathaniel Watson at No. 225. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at the Round 7 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
