Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chargers shredded theirs for Michael Barrett. He came off 79 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
Harden at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 5 they get a seam-stretching tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
A conviction pick on Kris Jenkins at No. 37 that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value with a capital V on Kingsley Suamataia in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kalen King in the 106th pick, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on Michael Barrett at slot 139, well ahead of any board in the building. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached into another round for Frank Gore Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Myles Harden in No. 223, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Solomon Byrd in the 256th overall pick, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
