Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers let Rosengarten fall into their laps, and walked away with a B+.

You could see the war room lean forward. Roger Rosengarten at slot 223 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

They are betting McClellan proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.8 · Pick 8 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 11
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get a true top target at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 35
Chop Robinson at slot 41 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
They liked Jackson Powers-Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 43. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 68
Trey Benson at the 69th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 80
They read the board right and Mike Sainristil was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Matt Goncalves · OT · rank 106
A straight-up fair deal on Matt Goncalves at the 106th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Johnny Dixon · CB · rank 127
Johnny Dixon slipping to pick 139 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 186
Javon Baker in No. 183 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 232
Jase McClellan at Round 6, Pick 41 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 179
Somehow Roger Rosengarten was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · Ryan Watts · CB · rank 225
Ryan Watts at pick No. 256 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
