The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Every board in the league had Logue lower, and that gap is the story.
They banked enough surplus on Dial to cover a lot of smaller sins. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get a mismatch in the passing game. A real need, handled.
In pick 18 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Good price on Kamren Kinchens in No. 37, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A straight-up fair deal on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick No. 58, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid sticker price for Trey Benson in Round 3, Pick 5, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
A quiet steal in the 106th overall pick: Zak Zinter for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
Ainias Smith at the 116th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Sataoa Laumea at Round 4, Pick 27 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy little value on Will Shipley in No. 139, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Jaylin Simpson at slot 175 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They did well to land Andru Phillips in pick 183, just ahead of his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Isaiah Davis in the 196th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Isaiah Williams at par in pick No. 204, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Marcellas Dial at slot 223 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let a running back like Miyan Williams reach the 235th overall pick and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Darius Muasau at the 244th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Phil Jurkovec in Round 7, Pick 32 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Jontrey Hunter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Zion Logue in No. 256 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
