When the story of this class is written, it opens with Frank Gore Jr. at the Round 6 slot, a reach of 45 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a franchise quarterback, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 27th pick they get a lockdown presence outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They went early on Kris Jenkins in No. 35, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Blake Corum a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They jumped the gun on Johnny Wilson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 140, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Frank Gore Jr. at the 181st overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Jalen Coker at par in the Round 7 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
