There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chargers took AJ Barner a full 64 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get a seam-stretching tight end. A real need, handled.
They paid up for Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 37 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Cooper Beebe went about where he belonged in pick 69. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Leonard Taylor III at Round 4, Pick 6, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
AJ Barner in pick No. 139 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on Steele Chambers in the 223rd pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Value said wait; Carson Steele in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
