Los Angeles Chargers

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Chargers and Reed: B+.

The Chargers ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided.

That Reed pick is the receipt they will wave around later. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Laiatu Latu · DL-EDGE · rank 10
In No. 14 they get juice off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Ladd McConkey · WR · rank 32
They did well to land Ladd McConkey in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.22 · Pick 54 · Jeremiah Trotter Jr. · LB · rank 59
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went about where he belonged in pick 54. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 57
Value with a capital V on Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 69, a genuine coup. The roster fit checks out.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Max Melton · CB · rank 63
Max Melton at the 75th pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Dadrion Taylor-Demerson · S · rank 83
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in the 106th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 105
MarShawn Lloyd slid further than he should have, and the 117th pick is lovely value for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.18 · Pick 118 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 119
Tyler Davis at Round 4, Pick 18 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Josh Newton · CB · rank 125
Josh Newton in pick No. 139 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 165
They liked Luke McCaffrey enough to skip the value, taking him in the 152nd overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · Austin Reed · QB · rank 231
Somehow Austin Reed was still sitting there in pick 256, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
