You build a draft on nights like this. Josh Newton had no business being available in slot 181, and the Chargers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get an island corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Roman Wilson at No. 46 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 56 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Fair-plus on Jalen McMillan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Braelon Allen in pick 110 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Maason Smith at slot 140 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Josh Newton in the 181st overall pick, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
JD Bertrand at slot 225 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Julian Pearl in No. 234 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Circle this one: Sheridan Jones at Round 7, Pick 33 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
