You can usually follow a front office's logic. This one is harder. The Chargers spent pick No. 123 on Tommy Eichenberg while quarterback sat unaddressed. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The cost of the Logue reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Bishop value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
Good price on Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick 60, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
No drama and no debate, Zach Frazier went about where he belonged in No. 64. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nice patience on Chris Braswell, who had no business lasting to the 65th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid up for Mike Sainristil at slot 69 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Junior Colson at the 74th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
A reach for Bucky Irving in Round 3, Pick 19; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Michael Hall Jr.. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Zak Zinter in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Mohamed Kamara in slot 119 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Tommy Eichenberg, a linebacker that was not the priority.
Malik Washington in pick No. 125 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Will Shipley at pick 129 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had Cole Bishop higher than the 142nd pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They took Zion Tupuola-Fetui at par in Round 5, Pick 26, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
AJ Barner at No. 183 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy little value on Kenny Logan Jr. in the 213th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They paid sticker price for Daequan Hardy in the 226th overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zion Logue. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
