The trade table was a mismatch, and the Chargers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Turner value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 16th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
In slot 32 they get a premier pass rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in pick No. 37; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick 49 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
Zach Frazier in No. 57 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Brandon Dorlus at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Mike Sainristil at par in slot 74, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Fair-plus on Blake Corum, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid a round early for Zak Zinter in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Jaden Hicks in pick No. 101, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They let Khyree Jackson come to them and pounced at No. 114. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Justin Eboigbe at the 123rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Tommy Eichenberg at pick 124, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They jumped the gun on Braelon Allen, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They did well to land Justin Rogers in the Round 5 slot, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Frank Gore Jr. slid further than he should have, and the 183rd overall pick is lovely value for the running back. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jontrey Hunter at the 226th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Steele Chambers at No. 238 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
