When a board-topper like Jordan Magee slides to Round 7, Pick 32, you do not overthink it, and the Chargers did not.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 37th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at No. 41 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cade Stover at pick No. 76 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Good price on Bucky Irving in slot 95, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value with a capital V on Brenden Rice in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
MarShawn Lloyd at Round 4, Pick 13 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in pick 140, with Chau Smith-Wade worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Luke McCaffrey, who had no business lasting to the Round 5 slot. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Fabien Lovett at No. 181, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Johnny Dixon slid further than he should have, and Round 6, Pick 28 is lovely value for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Ryan Flournoy at the 225th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steal is underselling it; Jordan Magee at slot 252 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Somehow Nathan Thomas was still sitting there in pick No. 253, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It fills a real need, too.
