Somebody in Round 7, Pick 5 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chargers sat still while Anthony Gould, the No. 142 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Chop Robinson in pick No. 20 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tyler Guyton is a better player than the 40th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Troy Franklin at pick 41 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Ja'Tavion Sanders was the payoff at the 51st overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Junior Colson at No. 69. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Adisa Isaac at slot 70 is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, DJ James in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Kris Abrams-Draine at Round 4, Pick 7 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
MarShawn Lloyd slipping to the 110th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Zak Zinter in slot 112 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Gabriel Murphy at the 140th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Javon Foster at Round 5, Pick 33 is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Anthony Gould here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Taking Ro Torrence in pick No. 231 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Steele Chambers at pick 253 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
