The Chargers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Brenden Rice at the 72nd pick regardless, 41 picks early. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Colby at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th pick they get an island corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Value said wait; Byron Murphy II in No. 40 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached into another round for Brenden Rice, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach for Seth McLaughlin in Round 4, Pick 8; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had Khyree Jackson higher than the 145th overall pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Connor Colby at slot 186 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
