Somehow the biggest item on the list survived the weekend. The Chargers never addressed edge rusher, and it is the kind of gap that lingers. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Powers-Johnson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Powers-Johnson a notch or two before his time. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid up for Kingsley Suamataia at the Round 2 slot when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had cheaper options than Blake Corum at Round 3, Pick 2, and it noticed. The roster fit checks out.
No drama and no debate, Junior Colson went about where he belonged in the 69th overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Johnny Wilson in No. 71 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Leonard Taylor III at pick No. 105 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No edge and no loss on Javion Cohen in slot 142; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They did well to land Michael Barrett in the 183rd pick, just ahead of his grade. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Matthew Jones at pick No. 226 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
