You can draft well and still miss the point. The Chargers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The Tagovailoa pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. However the rest shakes out, Bishop at that price is a win they earned.
They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a red-zone target to build around. A real need, handled.
Quinyon Mitchell in pick No. 37 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper Beebe. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Leonard Taylor III at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cole Bishop at the 139th pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
AJ Barner at pick 183 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taulia Tagovailoa at slot 223 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached into another round for Isaac Guerendo, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
