Somebody in slot 225 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chargers sat still while Tahj Washington, the No. 189 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
They are betting Dixon proves the room right and everyone else wrong. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
In the end it comes back to Graham Barton, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 32 they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Xavier Legette at pick No. 37 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value with a capital V on T.J. Tampa in the 60th overall pick, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A quiet steal in No. 69: Xavier Worthy for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Michael Hall Jr. at the 83rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on MarShawn Lloyd. A need, and now a little less of one.
Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cole Bishop in pick 110 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor itch, scratched.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Theo Johnson in No. 128. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Mohamed Kamara in the 134th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Kalen King at par in pick 140, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Luke McCaffrey in Round 5, Pick 10, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Nelson Ceaser at the 160th pick, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Johnny Dixon in slot 181 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Tanor Bortolini in pick No. 182; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Caedan Wallace in the Round 6 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Tahj Washington still on the board at Round 7, Pick 5. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Trey Knox at pick No. 249 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at pick 253 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor need, but a need all the same.
