Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Matthew Jones at Round 7, Pick 3 is 31 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own. However the rest shakes out, Worthy at that price is a win they earned.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
A premium they did not need to pay, Kris Jenkins a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Junior Colson in the 53rd pick. A minor itch, scratched.
A slide stopped in the 69th overall pick, with Xavier Worthy worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Trey Benson in pick No. 106 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Mekhi Wingo at No. 111 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Luke McCaffrey at the 139th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Jared Wiley enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 183. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Matthew Jones in the Round 7 slot, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
